We’ve created great places

Our record on our iconic night time economy:

  • We invested £30 million to lovingly restore and bring into public ownership our showstopper Soho Theatre Walthamstow, with an amazing programme of comedy, theatre, music, community events and family shows.

  • We hosted a London Creative Enterprise Zone in Blackhorse Lane, nurturing our homegrown talent and supporting the independent breweries at the Blackhorse Beer Mile.

  • We have invested £17.2m to improve our public spaces with new lighting, signage and CCTV in Walthamstow Town Centre.

  • We started the refurbishment of Vestry House Museum and Chestnuts House, and supported the expanded nighttime cultural offer at William Morris Gallery.

  • We hosted and supported iconic cultural events across the borough, including Revel Pucks Circus, Dialled In Festival and Leyton Más.

Our record on our high streets:

  • We started building a new step-free accessible station entrance at Leyton Station, with better access and more platform capacity.

  • We used national government funding for high street community projects in Chingford, Walthamstow and Leytonstone, such as Open Leytonstone or St Johns Community Cinema.

  • We built Coronation Square in Leyton with a new public space, shops and sports facilities.

  • We started the process of supporting Leyton Orient to build a new state-of-the-art stadium in the borough.

  • We campaigned to reform the aim-to-permit principle in gambling legislation, to give us greater powers to refuse gambling licensing applications on our high streets.

Our record on our housing:

  • We were one of the top five council house builders in the country over the last three years, delivering 624 council homes since 2022.

  • We started building new high-quality temporary accommodation on council sites and brought 250 empty homes back into use. We ended the use of hotels for families for temporary accommodation.

  • We achieved the second highest possible rating for our social housing in an inspection in 2026.

  • We secured a record £200 million of affordable housing money to build new housing, regenerate our housing estates and restart work on stalled sites, increasing the amount of affordable housing in the borough.

  • We were second borough in London to introduce a Private Landlord Licensing Scheme. Our scheme offered protection to 30,000 residents and the new Renters Rights Reform brought in by the Labour Government has reduced evictions.
